Sit Pretty / Beg

From sit, dog lifts front paws and balances upright on haunches.

Public trick guide

Difficulty: advanced

Estimated time: 3-8 weeks

Prerequisites: o1

Supplies: treats, non-slip surface, optional wall support

Age suitability: Not before about 12 months.

Physical suitability: Not appropriate for long-backed breeds, dogs with spinal/hip history, heavy giant breeds, or puppies.

Why dogs take to it: Some dogs offer brief natural lifts, but controlled duration requires deliberate core conditioning.

Breed tendencies: Small, balanced dogs often perform well; long-backed dogs should avoid this trick.

Verbal cues: sit pretty, beg, up

Hand signal: Raise hand slightly above nose and back toward handler.

History: “Begging” appears in historical dog training and art records for centuries.
